The differences between a bed and jewellery box are evident, however the manner in which one sets about commissioning either of them is the same. The relationship between maker and client is the cornerstone of commissioning a piece of bespoke furniture. The highest quality workmanship is employed in both cases, and the aesthetic and practical requirements must meet, and hopefully surpass, your expectations.
An initial, informal meeting often takes place, typically where the piece of furniture will live. Here Bertram will talk over design styles, dimensions and the function of the furniture. He shall also discuss with you a budget and timescale, look at different types of timber and veneer samples and draw on previous work or surrounding objects to gain inspiration and ideas.
At this stage, he will collate all this information and start to sketch ideas and draw up designs. As this process evolves he will return with them (and further samples) to see you. He will also provide a quotation for the cost of the piece. This often happens via email also. Upon approval, you pay a deposit and your piece of bespoke furniture can start to come to life.
During the production stage of your commission, you are welcome to visit the workshop. Here you can see first hand the level of craftsmanship involved in the making of your piece of furniture. Furthermore clients often find it interesting to see the ‘behind the scenes’ making of jigs and test pieces.
The outstanding balance is paid upon delivery and your satisfaction. You will be left with a piece of bespoke furniture that will wear in for generations.
Bertram works with a wide variety of timbers, including natives such as: ash, oak, sycamore, plane, elm, chestnut, beech and walnut. Other European and more exotic woods include sapele, cherry, reclaimed rosewood, maple, pear, padouk, purpleheart and wenge.
Where solid timber is not suitable, or if one desires fantastic burrs or subtly-textured pips, then he will use veneers. Samples are of course available and there is a vast range of timbers to choose from.
