Kidney Desk

This delightful commission was to make a three-legged writing desk to fit into an alcove in the corner of a room. After looking through timber samples, the client settled upon pommele sapele veneer for the writing surface, with its mesmerising figuring pattern and rich colour. The shape of the desk is taken from a kidney shape but with an additional curve in the back.

The legs taper down to a cylinder and were shaped by hand. See below for a video of the making process. The drawer pulls out from under the front and glides gently back into the curve of the front apron. A small up-stand was also included around the rear edge of the desk.

Made from sapele and pommele sapele with a Cedar of Lebanon drawer base.
